New form of diplomatic service required – President
President Mahinda Rajapaksa stressed the importance of having a new form of diplomatic service instead of the traditional diplomatic service.
“Today we need a new form of Diplomatic Service instead of the existing traditional diplomatic service; a diplomatic service that is capable of performing their duties in assisting the economic development process of the country,” President said at a ceremony held at Temple Trees recently, to hand over credentials to 17 newly-appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners.
He also said that officers of the diplomatic service should be well knowledgeable of the prevailing state of the country and be able to identify the things that the country needs from the host countries.
Diplomats should strengthen the relationships with various influential social groups of the relevant countries and eliminate the wrong impressions and attitudes that have been created overseas by the groups linked with the LTTE said the President. He further added that they should strive to convince about the reality of the prevailing situations in our country and thereby secure the honour of the country,

SL certainly does need a big helping hand in the diplomatic service.
Hon Pieris and his team have miserably failed in projecting a correct image and in communicating effective messages.
The problem is that merit has no place in selecting appropriate people for appropriate roles. Capability does not matter; what matters is whom you know and perhaps, how much buckshees you can palm off to someone.
Machan… Jul fool, i think “Norway or Britain” is the best & honest helping hand for us in this matter..! Isn’t it…?!
It is not enough we have a re-vamped diplomatic service who care for the country and strive hard to project a good image of the country, to respond to disinformation and distortion of the image of the image of the country by its enemies, such as the diaspora LTTE and their cronies. We need also within SL disallow the diplomats of the imperial West from riding rough shod within SL, impose their will on the country, spy on the country and aid the enemies within to sabotage and subvert for their vested interests.
Nicholas,
It is the Kalla-T’s who caused all the problems including corruption.
They have always been after social and economic dominance over the majority community.
They started off with the 50:50 call and when they saw a smart breed of leaders (SWRD) emerging they started complaining and evetually ended arming their youth.
The only solution is to send them back to where they came from. That’s where they belong.
