More than 70%, killing pedestrians. Alarming to the police and drivers? Most of roads in country are narrowed. And there’s no pavement. Else pavement occupied by hawkers. We need better roads and rules.
Niyamasinhalaya,
What do you mean most roads in country are norrowed? Were they broad and now narrow?. Most of these accidents seem like careless drivers who have no considreration for any body else. Yes the roads are narrow and has been for decades and need to be broadened. It is not such a simple matter which can be solved overnight There are a lot of implications and much more to be taken in to consideration. THe roads in S/L have got so much better in the last few years and all this will happen in good time but our people have to stop criticising every rhing the GOSL is trying to do and appreciate the development of the country and stay positive.
Some of my friends who visited S/L in December were really impressed with the major clean up that has happened in the Dehiwala which was absolutely filthy a few yeras ago. They even commented on how much more cleaner Colombo was this time around.We need all our people to work as one if we expect our country to go forward and be a world leader in tourism or industry.
Dear SisiraP,
You have given a good answer about our roads being narrow and crowded but you also failed to mention the human factor-the most important- being the cause of over 80% of the accidents on our roads these days.Very many of our drivers are either selfish trying beat the man in front or are trying to show off their skills in sharp (dangerous) driving.Strict Laws are there or are being framed and vigilance by the Police is being carried out to the best of their ability, but SELF DISCIPLINE must get into the heads of all drivers to minimise this trend. “It is better to be alive late than be dead on time”
Roads in other countries are also narrow eg in India. At least our Hon President should be given credit for improving our road networks, concreting or carpeting rural roads where there were only pot-holed muddy roads before. Broadening roads is not an easy task due to land rights of people from whom land has to be taken on either side to braoden the road. Money is needed to pay in comopensation. Cotta Road in Borella is an example.
The reals reasons for RV accidents are;
1. People gain their driving licences through bribery with no proper training.
2. People driving vehicles which are not in roadworthy conditions.
3. People wanting to overtake other vehicles disregarding the road and traffic situations.
It is for the respective departments involved in GOSL to take immediate and necessary action to address these issues, I have highlighted.
Dear AUJ
I totally agree with you. That is why I did mention that this seems to be a result of careless driving. There are too many wrechkless,
selfish and inconsidrate drivers on the road.Yes our people need to learn descipline and I think we are heading in the right direction slowly but surely. lets keep our fingers crosseda and hope for the best.
