500,000 workers would lose jobs due to Coronavirus impact – Ranil
Warning that 500,000 workers ranging from three-wheeler drivers to high level executives would lose their jobs due to the impact of the rampaging Coronavirus, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said last week that the government, by printing Rs. 200 billion during an economic recession, had only succeeded in pushing up inflation.
Pointing out that the government’s response to the crisis was inadequate, he said the country should be provided with an economic assessment of the situation, a credible economic package and urgent relief for the self employment, SME and construction sectors, before more jobs and livelihoods were lost.
Wickremesinghe also called for the recent ban on imports to be lifted, noting that domestic industries required imported raw materials.
Apparel exports would lose 60 percent of its income, tourism would have a very bad year and foreign remittances would reduce by 20 percent. These issues should be resolved by working with the IMF, he added.

There is a thing called ‘theory & practise ‘ in politics. Telling things are easy. But, doing things are difficult. Political history shows that many have missed the opportunities. What SL urgently needs is honest & good planning , effective implementation, combined with close monitoring for results & reporting performance to the public. The question is whether the politicians are prepared to ‘learn the lessons’ from the
past ? Untill such time, future will be bleak because the polictics plays major role and determine the life of the people !
Mr PS,
GOSL is led by HE Gothabhaya Rajapaksa, elected by a clear majority of voters without a single vote from North and East.
This is the best Govt since independence in 1948.
See how well the pandemic has been managed and the outstanding achievements. Even PM Modi admired SL’s Pandemic Management by HE and has agreed to support the economy with a swap of USD 1.1 billion.
None of the 1000 body bags from UN have been used.
Please don’t talk about ‘learn the lessons’. Only LTTE failed to learn lessons and we all saw what happened to them.
