Your Excellency,
As you feel the importance of Deepawali and I think it is time to declare Deepawali a National Holiday in sri lanka as a measure of good will to hindus in sri lanka.
suren
Deepavali is the conquest of ‘good’ over ‘evil’. This is symbolically represented as light dispelling the darkness. The struggle between good and evil continues daily in our lives. If we live according to our conscience we will be righteous. We will then have peace and joy in our heart. We become a child of God who is our Father and Mother. We become one with God. God will dwell in our soul, the temple of God. When we die in this state of Grace we shall merit eternal happiness in God. Such a person is a light in the darkness. All of us should have the light of God burning brightly in our souls to dispel the darkness of sin in the world. The people who are attached to the pleasures of this world, and seek power, commit murder, crime and rape, live in darkness of sin. They are children of the devil. They live in darkness. When they die their souls will for all eternity live in deep torment, sadness and misery. This is hell.
I agree with Suren, we need to declare Deepavali a national holiday to celebrate the spiritual significance of this festival in prayer and meditation and in performing religous rites.
