Darusman report should be withdrawn: Vasu
The government yesterday claimed that the inaccuracy of the Darusman Report was proven by the census that was carried out by the Department of Census and Statistics.
Meanwhile the opposition claimed the report by the Census Department could not be taken as fact until there was proper verification of the methods used to collect the data.
“This discrepancy in the numbers shows the speculation and myth that has been woven into the Darusman report and therefore it should be withdrawn as unreliable,” National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara told the Daily Mirror.
He also claimed the report by the Panel of Experts appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, contained information gathered from unreliable, third-party sources. “The Darusman report was written in New York. Based on hear say stories, evidence that was not from primary sources. We have done a physical verification on the ground and found that about 8,000 people have died under extraordinary circumstances,” Mr. Nanayakkara charged.
Nearly 8,000 people, including 550 children below the age of 10, were killed in the North during the final stages of the war, according to the Report by the Department of Census and Statistics. However the Darusman Report and other international organisations put the death toll at over 40,000 civilians.

“Meanwhile the opposition claimed the report by the Census Department could not be taken as fact until there was proper verification of the methods used to collect the data.”
The opposition has full trust however, on the numbers and method of collection of data by forigners, eg: darusalam report. Opposition never made a similar remark on the darusalam report.
This shows how distant the opposition is from the local professional Sri lankans and how slavery they are in front of forigners. Opposition will lick any side of the forigners in broad day light I am sure.
At least the opposition should have had the decency of not insulting qualified professionals who did the job in the census department. What a shame?
The toothless red lion that failed to reach paradise. VN was a firebrand who evoked dreams and aspirations in youth in the 70’s and 80’s. Pity to note the fire’s now been extinguished. Maybe Amden’s preachings can help this man.
It is always the case with Tamils, Tamil front organizations & supporters to CONTRADICT anything & everything the present Govt. does.
They are still licking the wounds of 30+ years war/terrorism on ALL citizens irrespective of ethinicity.
Enough is enough, either you are WITH Sri lanka or against. If against its time to give up your citizenship in Sri lanka, before Govt. pass laws to take it away.
People can oppose, criticize,BUT to go against your own country of birth is never heard of. Look at India CUURPT to the core, filthy, even foregners say its smells, & govt. grinds along as a slow cockroach. Next is USA they are so national minded.
All they (Indians) want is to turn India & Nepal to christianity, no Hinduism or Buddhism (Nepal is the Birth place of lord Buddha).
Our own citizens NEVER support any govt. unless that govt. give all they want & nothing is enough. Bit NOW & lot later, as the Tamils say.
Just expressing my views about our beloved Motherland~ Gamunu (retd engineer – Canada)
Mr Gamunu,
Believe it is pretty cold in Canada. Wonder how you overcame the pressures of your patriotism to seek refuge over there?
Prana,
Gamunu is an economic refugee in freezing Canada. Barking for the sake of barking! They never bite so do not worry.
