The Galle road has been closed for traffic from Kollupitiya junction to Galle Face due to a protest march by Buddhist monks of the Sihala Ravaya, police said.
The protestors demanded not to send the body of the self-immolated monk Ven. Bowatte Indraratana Thera to his home town in Ratnapura.
Meanwhile, anti-riot squad personnel equipped with water cannon have been called into the area.

Sama.
It is unfortunate when the men of clergy who are supposed to teach people of their faith to keep calm and refrain from crime , Commits a crime them selves. Taking your life is a crime in any language,Religion or Law.What can you expect from the average Sri lankan who do not know any better. So expect more trouble.
It is also very unfortunate that Sri Lnkan has become a real mess with all the radical rubbish that is going on now and makes no sence.
Hello Sisira, Well said…..
I am carefully monitoring since recent past of time, the happenings in Sri Lanka not up to the mark, even not a positive sound people to see, observe and to apply daily life.
Just we blaming each others, or pointing fingers on others rather than find a corrective action on them self or individually.
Even dirty political leaders are playing selfish role for their own benefits, which is giving very negative feeling to the nations.
I assume that we have to think outside the box to live and work with open mind with every religion and individual. We have to respect self and respect others in their daily life and find a longer time solution very positive manner.
LET’S LIVE AS “ONE NATION & ONE FAMILY”
Self immolation may be crime but the Ven. Bowatte Indraratana Thera was over enthusiastic in communicating an effective message to Buddhist society.
The Ven. Bowatte Indraratana Thera is indeed a martyr and I sincerely hope his message gets across to all concerned in this important Vesak season.
The Ravaya Balaya has picked up the message. The way things are in our society, we do need extraordinary acts to communicate messages to leaders and society.
I am moved by media coverage of the late Ven. Bowatte Indraratana Thera’s courageous, selfless and divine act to message society on cruelty to animals.
I fear more of this follow.
We have had a Buddha sasana Ministry for over 7 years; we have however failed to inculcate basis Buddhist tenets in society.
The Bodhu Bala Sena, Sinhala Ravaya and the Ravana balaya have all called for a shake up of the Buddha Sasana Ministry with responsibility for propogation of pure Buddhist principles be given to our great warrior, Gothabhaya Rajapaksa.
Corniche.
We need more people who think like you. What most of these radical thinking people don’t realize is that we can only prosper if we work as Sri Lankans not as Buddhist,Hindus, Muslims or Christians.
I remember the words of our Great Murali who said he is a Sri lnkan firstly and a Tamil secondly.
Chamdini I don’t think the monk achieved any thing other than set a very bad example. We have lost the life so many human beings in the last thee decades and we do not want any more of that. What we want is people think before they jump.
It is great to see at least some Sri Lankans engaged in addressing the most important issue to the nation at this moment! Pity there is not somebody willing to provide free patrol and a flame to these protestors.
