Gnanasara thera’s appeal hearing today
The Court of Appeal will today consider a request for filing an appeal challenging the six-year sentence pronounced on General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena Organisation venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara thera.
The request for the appeal will be taken up before the two-judge bench comprising of Chairman of the Appeal’s Court, Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Arjuna Obeyesekera.
Earlier this month, Galagodaththe Gnanasara thera was convicted of four charges over Contempt of Court and sentenced to 19 years of rigorous imprisonment, to be completed in 6 years.
The case was filed against Gnanasara thera on four charges including forcibly entering the Homagama Magistrate’s Court on the 25th of January 2016 during a case being heard over a group of Army Intelligence Unit officials on charges of abducting journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda.
The thera was also charged of threatening and intimidating state officials in Court at the time of the hearing.

Areesting Ven. Gnanasara and keeping him Locked is a part of a wider conspiracy. This is just testing the water! Since there was no wider spread protests, 4 more outspoken monks going to be arrested for causing damage to Gvt. property during protests issues pertaining to war heroes. Recently protesters damaged property belong to Railway department. Anyone arrested? After arresting Buddhist monks next is approving the infamous new constitution. Who is going to protest?

The Ven Galgoda Atthe Gnanasara was found guilty by a Court.
We have to respect that decision.
If we don’t respect that ourt’s decision, others such as Duminda Silva, Sarath Fonseka and Navy Sampath and Arjun Aloysius and Arjun Mahendram should all be free to continue with their nefarious activities.
As Ven Galgoda Atthe Gnanasara is a venerated Sinhala Buddhist Leader, a conscience of the Sinhala Buddhist Nation, his incarceration is likely to affect the Majority Sinhala Buddhist Population detrimentally, in a significant manner.
Therefore, the President of this land, the Lead Sinhala Buddhist, should consider the social consequences and pardon The Ven Galgoda Atthe Gnanasara.
