Hindu says UN resolution was tweaked by India in favour of Sri Lanka
Onlanka News – By Walter Jayawardhana
The United Nations Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka was not passed in its original form but tweaked by India so that the wording to say that the implementation of its assistance that the UN Commissioner will provide must be with the concurrence of Sri Lanka said the Hindu newspaper in its editorial March 23.
Yet the newspaper warned, Colombo must not misread the concession and the passage of the resolution and the world will not be guided by Sri Lanka’s claims that it will carry out its own probes into the violations.
Reminding about the island nation’s own “Lessons Learnt and Reconciliations Commission” recommendations the Hindu said President Rajapaksa may not like the Geneva Convention but he has brought it upon himself.
The newspaper believed to be reflecting the view of New Delhi was also making assurances that the voting does not mean a change of the policy that India stands for the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka.
The following is the full text of the editorial: “The passage of the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka is proof that the international community disapproves of the manner in which the Rajapaksa government is addressing the fallout of its Armageddon moment of mid-May 2009. The resolution, backed by India, asks Sri Lanka credibly to investigate allegations of rights violations in the course of its war against the LTTE. The wording of the resolution was tweaked by India to say the implementation assistance the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights will provide must be with Sri Lanka’s “concurrence”. Yet, Colombo must not misread this concession. Thursday’s resolution is the first real sign that the world will no more let itself be guided solely by Sri Lankan claims that it has the will to carry out its own probe. It also means that gentle prodding and quiet diplomacy will not be the main means the world will adopt towards the island nation. Few would dispute that Sri Lanka took too long to acknowledge the allegations of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances and delayed moves towards a political settlement indefinitely. Ultimately, its own ‘Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission’ came out with some constructive recommendations, but these have not been followed up. President Rajapaksa may not like the Geneva resolution but he has brought it upon himself.
“India’s vote has already aroused consternation in some sections in Colombo but it is crucial that its intentions not be misread. There is no change in the Indian defence of the unity and integrity of its southern neighbour, only a realisation that the tardy progress towards reconciliation could undermine the prospects for peace and stability there. For the first time in decades, New Delhi is in concord with popular sentiments in Tamil Nadu but it would be wrong to look at its Geneva vote as merely the product of domestic political pressure. Over time, the false assurances on devolution and implementation of “the 13th amendment and beyond” it received from Colombo have frustrated South Block and forced it to reconsider its diplomatic options. What is welcome in India’s latest stand is that it has outgrown its misplaced fear of the growing regional presence of China. Having voted for the resolution, the onus is now on India to remain engaged with the Lankan authorities, as its interests lie in promoting reconciliation and supporting the quest of Tamil Sri Lankans for justice, equality and dignity. The solution has to be Lankan-led. Persistent emphasis on accountability from outside may jeopardise the larger goal of reconciliation by giving a fresh thrust to Sinhala nationalism. India needs to brace for extraordinary diplomatic channels.”(EOM)

this stand of Mr. Manmohan Singh should be stand with the issue of “Kashmier” too…..its shame for India….stand with USA….this will make India suffer than..Sri Lankan……i put my coin on it…..jst wait for another decades…you will say am correct……
We all go after what others say and always think of hatting others. Let the truth come its own way……………..
India brings itself the presence of china into south asia By voting against SL & more frustration in domestic issues of india..!
And india should mind now that all south asian countries around india are support SL..!
India has isolated in south asia while going against SL at UN & China is on its way to explore freely around Srilanka..!
Now it’s too late india to think of its “southern neighbour” kindly..! India threw stone to SL while being in a glass house & now have to face the outcomes too…!
India punished itself instead punishing SL as things went wrong by not being prudent. Only now it seems india admitting their fault.
This might end up even breaking india into parts while SL is in peace…! Happening things which no one expected is always seen practically in the world…!
MMS caressed MR’s face and cut his neck! (Moona atha gaga bella kepuva).
What a hypocrisy of India to advice SL for an independent inquiry into alleged massacre of Tamil civilians! For many decades, Indian troops had been wantonly killing thousands of Muslim civilians in Jammu & Kashmir and still go on killing them rampantly with no one to stop them. They may have killed about 300,000 so far. They were buried in mass graves. UNHRC, USA and EU are totally silent about this. They don’t want to upset India. India is in their big league of nuclear power nations. India is their important economic partner in SE Asia. So the the West looks the other way. War crimes and crimes against humanity by India goes unreported and unpunished in the Hague, just like the war crimes and crimes against humanity by USA, Britain, Israel and NATO allies.
Isn’t it time we call an end to this so-called ‘special relationship’ with India? Infact we should cease large scale trading with India. India should also be kicked out of ASEAN group for its slavish allegiance to imperial West.
India has always been our enemy for milleniums and still is. It is cunningly DIVERTING ATTENTION from Tamil Nadu cry for autonomy from Central Govt, to form its own Tamil Nation for 70 million Tamils. India is trying craftily to shift its problem to our shores. There are only 1.6 million Tamils in N & E in all and 2 million Tamils in the South. The vast majority of them do not want ‘eelam’. How can you provide ‘eelam’ for 1.6 million in N & E when 2 million live in S with no ‘eelam’ happily with the Sinhalese and Muslims? The eelamists in N are only a miniscule, limited to TNA. The majority of Tamils in N & E want to be united as ONE NATION ONE COUNTRY, to remain as SL citizens to enjoy a better lifestyle post VP/LTTE era. They had enough of this TNA drivel shovved down their throats. Their children were conscripted to become suicide bombers and gun-fodder, having been brainwashed with lies about acheiving martyrdom and ‘paradise’, as taught to Muslim suicide bombers.
Already the LLRC recommendations are being implemented. In time all will be implemented and more. However, we should do away with the 13th Ammendment to our Constitution, enforced on the weakling JR by the macho Rajiv Gandhi. Serve the idiot right, he was killed by VP! Such Provincial Councils, a copy of Parliament, is not suitable to our small country. We can have Local Councils but not PCs. This is a totally unnecessary vast expense the country can ill-afford.
No devolution to be given to the N & E. This is the beginning of the road to sovereignty, as is happening in Scotland in Gt Britain today. Why should a minority group, TNA, who do not even represent the majority Tamils in N (except by fear and the gun) and who is the political face of LTTE, his idea, whose members were hand-picked by him, to be spies in the Parliament and to agitate for nothing less than ‘eelam’. Isn’t it time we ban and disband TNA altogether for this reason? The military wing of LTTE has been wiped-out, now it is time for the political wing of LTTE to be ended. The imperial West, the diaspora Tamils, Tamil Nadu and India can go to hell!
‘The newspaper believed to be reflecting the view of New Delhi was also making assurances that the voting does not mean a change of the policy that India stands for the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka.’ Who cares whether India stands for the unity of Sri Lanka or not. Only thing clear is, India succumbed to the pressure of Tamil parties representing the South. If India stands for the unity of Sri Lanka, why force the infamous 13 amendment! Inia is the biggest joker in the region.
My Dear Sri Lankan Readers
A very important note: There are few groups in Sri Lanka who worked very hardly to put all civilians in this grave situation. Namely. UNP, Ranil Wickramasinghe, Dr Jayalath Jayawardene, JVP, TNA, Mrs Sarath Fonseka & family, Tamil Diaspora, Mangala Saraweera, CBK.
