Import tax increased to control numbers
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said, at a media briefing yesterday, that there were one million three wheelers registered in the country. He said the import tax on them was increased in order to control their numbers.
With the young people, on completing of their studies, wanting to earn money by operating three wheeler taxis, there seemed to be a dearth of young people for developmental activities in the country.
Last year alone there had been 90,000 vehicles, including three wheelers, brought into the country.
Though the tax had been increased earlier, vehicle imports had increased by 55%, he said.
The importation of vehicles should be governed by a national policy and, until the road system is improved, the importation should be discouraged, he said.

Why don’t you banned them for ever. There are a menace.
Excellent economics, Mr Ministeer.
Whoever created that brain in your head was, I believe, under the influence of Ganja when it was created.
Ravi, your fellow Minister has appointed 94 persons as Coordinating Secretaries and 56 as Advisor’s to the Ministry of Highways. The 56 Advisor’s had been appointed in the Kandy District, which is the Minister’s electorate. Most of them had not passed the GCE Ordinary Level examination. Usually a Minister has around 15 persons as a personal staff, however he had appointed 94 as Coordinating Secretaries.
Ravi, if Yahapalanaya is true to its word, our economy will be booming by now.
Dear Lord of the Exchequer (Minister of Finance) ,
As Thilak of above suggests, you have very clearly run off at a tangent when you refer to school leavers AFTER completing their studies resorting to unproductive employment such as taxi or 3 wheeler drivers.
Dear Minister , none of these people , I repeat NONE of them would ever venture out into this field if they could ever find enough political clout to secure a grand job of above description. Most of the three wheeler operators do seek a clean living. They are gainfully but painfully occupied eking out a meager living on a legal exercise and meeting a customer demand.
On the other hand what are the opportunities you have created to absorb the thousands of University educated young men into your so called development activities? Do the elite band of our University entrants have a rosy future?
Going by your utterances and obnoxious actions I would suggest you create an Open University for lunatics and be the Professor in charge.
Is this man capable of running a ” thosey Kadey” never mind a finance ministry.
The dumb-wit Ravi says ‘ there seemed to be a dearth of young people for developmental activities in the country.’
Dear minister, what development activities has the Sena-Singhe Government commenced since coming to power on 08 Jan 2015?
Zero is the answer; it’s been al abot allegations of stolen wealth and taxpayer burden to pay off loans taken by the R Bro Government.
The CB Governer’s SIL is the only person in SL enjoying the stupidities of the Sena-Singhe Government.
The rest are suffering under ever increasing VAT.
I meant was this man is not even capable of running a “thosey kadey” never mind a finance ministry.
