Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had informed the United National Party (UNP) that he will contest the upcoming Presidential Election with the aim of abolishing the Executive Presidency, if the Presidential candidacy is given to him with the unanimous agreement of the UNP.
He had emphasised that he took this decision in response to the requests made by several UNP members, not to surpass another person.
He had also stated that there’s no truth in rumours that he is going to contest the Presidential Election in a bid to protect the Party leadership held by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

What is not understood is why he cannot do it it now with the use of Amendment A which was gazetted on 9th July 1918 which will save Billions of Rs.for a Presidential Election and another Billion of Rs. per year for a ineffectual President
The UNP and JO (SLPP) and JVP should get together prior to the invitations for nominations for the Presidential Elections and pass the 20A in Parliament with 2/3rds majority.
This will not only save the nation but save the entire political system including UNP’s trials, Rajapaksa Family political supremacy, the intrusion of the JVP into the political stakes and threats to democracy.
Once the Executive Presidency (toothless under the 19A, anyway) is abolished, the Country can go to Parliamentary Polls where the Party with the most populist polices will gain a majority and elect a PM and Cabinet that can be held responsible to the voters.
This is the millennial’s wish.
Yes at the current moment its Mr. Karu is the only Gentleman candidate for the position he has all necessary qualifications to do it, as well as he is not sponsored and backed by any of the Private or public Television Stations and I am sure he will be the last president in this country, The present government should add that to the next ballot paper along with the presidential vote a question form the public do you need a executive president or not yes or no if there is a two thirds majority then it is to implement it,
Excellent suggestion Karusha and Engr Perera,
Wish mature leaders would act to rid the Executive Presidency and end it with the departure of the current King who thinks and acts like a Grama Sevaka.
