Lanka performing well at primary education level- IPS survey
Sri Lanka has been performing well at the primary education level and significant policy gaps exist when it comes to secondary and tertiary education, an IPS survey revealed recently. It also said that Sri Lanka has been performing well at the primary education level.
IPS research indicates that only 35% of the age 15 and above population has completed upper-secondary education in Sri Lanka, and only 13.3% had completed tertiary education.
Meanwhile, the Labour Demand Survey (LDS) conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics has found that nearly one third of first-time job seekers coming from university or other higher education institutions are poorly prepared, primarily due to lack of job-specific skills or competencies as well as soft skills.
Speaking at the IPS hosted Policy Engagement Forum on ‘Education and Skills for Prosperity Forum, IPS Executive Director, Dushni Weerakoon, highlighted that education reforms are a priority for Sri Lanka as labour productivity is the key to ensuring the country’s growth. Especially, foreign investors will be looking at the kind of skill sets Sri Lanka can offer when making investment decisions, she further said, noting the importance of embedding highly-demanded skills in the graduates.
The policy recommendations made during the Forum discussion included improving the quality of teachers, providing more teacher-training programs and making career guidance available at the school level.
The current school curricula and the examination-based testing methods were identified as major weaknesses of the education system. Better planning is essential with regard to the professional development and education of teachers, it was further noted.
The Policy Engagement Forum aimed to identify knowledge gaps in better understanding the constraints for improving the relevance and quality of education in Sri Lanka.

‘Meanwhile, the Labour Demand Survey (LDS) conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics has found that nearly one third of first-time job seekers coming from university or other higher education institutions are poorly prepared, primarily due to lack of job-specific skills or competencies as well as soft skills.’ See the problem is right here. Education istitutes do not produce graduates to fit into existing ‘job-market’. Instead like a factory just keep on producing ‘squire peggs in round holes’. Just waste of time and money. The beauty is, the students who doesn’t have even basil O.Ls become politicians!!
and a woman with two degrees from Sri Lanken university work as a prostitute. Any fool can cram a book and pass a exam. If these guys are so clever why is the country in a such a poor state.
Dear Ranjith,
The two degrees that I have from Ruhunu University have never offered any value to me or to anyone else in the world. They are worthless rubbish. The entire University administration and academic staff are political appointees who lick the bums of idiot/corrupt politicians for their survival.
Ranjith, do you use your body parts such as hands, feet, brain to earn a living? I am sure you do.
Well, I did the same too, I used an additional but valuable valuable body part to earn not only a living but enough to live the rest of my life without being a slave to a stupid employer !
Dear Dilmini. I totally agree with you about the Sri Lanken university degrees. They are not worth the paper is written. You are also right I use my body parts like brain, hands etc to earn a living. But please don’t compare it to the personal body parts you are talking about. There is some thing call self respect. So many men handle you like a object with lust but without love. You will soon realize the difference when you fall in love with some . The money you earn is not worth no money. Please stop it.
MR Amarakoon. Most parents in Sri Lanka wants their children to become rocket scientist, engineers and doctors. The parents push them so hard until they get fed up and end up like psychopaths. This they do for their benefit to boast among their friend and relatives.
Instead of this stupid education system we must encourage our youngsters to become brick layers, plumbers and mechanics which they could earn a fortune where ever in the world, Isn’t better than become a toilet cleaner or a road sweeper in a foreign country with a degree from a Sri Lanken university.
