Members of Parliament with Dual citizenship should resign – Dhammananda Thera
Following the enactment of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, dual citizenship holders are not allowed to be Members of Parliament, Lekakadikari of the Asgiriya Chapter Venerable Medagama Dhammananda Thera said.
Speaking to the media in Kandy, Dhammananda Thera noted that members with dual citizenship must disclose such details to the public and immediately resign from Parliament.
Venerable Medagama Dhammananda Thera commended the passing of the new Constitutional Amendment which according to him has fulfilled the expectation of the Maha Sangha of ridding the Parliament from dual citizens.
Dhammananda Thera also noted that dual citizens should not be allowed to hold high posts in the government that can influence the country’s economic and political processes.
Dhammananda Thera said it is problematic that those who hold dual citizenship are allowed to take decisions that impact the citizens of Sri Lanka.

Why government not cancel Srilankan Citzenship when he or she migrate to another country . How they hold dual citizenship?
Dear HSU, when take a citizenship of another country you automatically denounce your own citizenship. subsequently, you can apply foy for dual Citizenship (only if Sri Lanka and the other country mutually agreed to this process). That is my understanding,
It is only a ploy to pickpocket money from those who are LUCKY enough to become a citizen of another country. Nobody become a citizen of another country unless it is a significantly better – both socially and financially – country than SL. They are not “denouncing ” their SL citizenship. Their SL citizenship is being deprived to loot their money through extortion written into the SL constitution. People born in SL are always SL citizens unless they have explicitly denounce it. Not even Great Britain does such shameless stupid thing like SL, given that GB citizenship is valued around the world since majority of countries does not require GB passport holders to have visa to visit those countries or visa will be issued as soon as applied for.
Amarakoon is correct.
A person is a dual citizen because both countries have agreed to that process.
The banning of political activity and representation for dual citizens is a retrograde action.
It does not have to mutually agreed between countries as a rule. Here is the information I referred to earlier.
“Dual citizenship
Dual citizenship (also known as dual nationality) is allowed in the UK. This means you can be a British citizen and also a citizen of other countries.
You do not need to apply for dual citizenship. You can apply for foreign citizenship and keep your British citizenship.
Many countries do not accept dual citizenship. Check with the country’s consulate or embassy in the UK to find out about that country’s laws on dual nationality.”

Dear Ms. Indra, You said ” You do not need to apply for dual citizenship. You can apply for foreign citizenship and keep your British citizenship.” Yes then you end up with Duel Nationality. In any SL embassy you can get a Dual Nationality application form.
This is USA:
Dual Citizenship or Nationality
Dual citizenship (or dual nationality) means a person may be a citizen of the United States and another country at the same time. U.S. law does not require a person to choose one citizenship or another.

Dear Amarakoon, My point is, People born in Sri Lanka, who have got a citizenship in another counter has no reason to reapply for the SL citizenship paying SL government millions, unless they themselves have renounced SL citizenship explicitly. They are born with it. making the law with intention to earn money by “assumed renounced” is one thing, renouncing one’s citizenship is another thing. What I pointed out was countries with most sort after, valuable citizenships do not subject even those become citizens of those countries when those people become a citizen of another country like SL government does. Then asking ‘expatriate’ to contribute. They would have helped a lot if they did not get kicked in the face.
