New Coach Cannot Perform Miracles, Says Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera
After a humiliating 163 run loss to Bangladesh on Friday, Sri Lanka are on the verge of exiting from the tri-nation series which has Zimbabwe as the third team. The result has raised questions about the credibility of the new coach Chandika Hathurusingha, while all-rounder Thisara Perera defended him and said that the coach can’t perform miracles.
Speaking after the defeat, the left handed batsman said, “Having Chandika Hathurusingha is a plus point for us, because he is one of the best coaches in the world. Previously I have worked with him in the Sri Lanka A team as well. But he needs time. No one can do miracles. I think it is time for the team to step up, with this new coach.”
Led by Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka lost their opening game of the tournament to Zimbabwe by 12 runs and are likely to crash out earlier than they would have liked. When quizzed on the results, Perera pointed out that the side struggled to execute the batting plans against Bangladesh.
“This is definitely a 300-run wicket – our batting just didn’t click. When we look at the last match against Zimbabwe, we have a lot of positives to take from our batting, but in this match, we couldn’t execute our batting plans,” the 28-year old said. “Again we didn’t execute our bowling plans in the match, but we came back strong after Shakib and Tamim batted well. It looked like a 350 score but it came down to 320. Our bowling unit is also doing well in the first 10 overs,” he further noted.
Perera believes the Lankans have it in them to make a comeback, but also said that, “Think we should keep our heads up, because no one should underestimate us. No one can say when we will rise up. I have faith that we can go far with our new coach.”

sri lankans did when murali terrorised the opposition and he was backed by ace Sanath J and as a batter pasted the opposition bowlers. sanath was backed by the likes of arvinda kalu the likes of which will be hard to duplicate. Posting 100 10 overs and the bowlers demoralsied thos who followed like arjuna had little to do.
Coaches can do very little if the players are not committed to achieve their objectives. First of all players selected are athletes and as such they ought to reach a minimum standard in running for speed and endurance, capable of leaping at least 15 feet and reaching out, I remeber ranatunga at the end of his an innings could not run often he wa seen walking.
Cricket is a team effort and the captain ought to provide the leadership and leadership is not a result of skills. A captain who go around with chip is a waste of time. Coaches should help the captain to bui,d team spirit which means helping those to realise these expectations.
We all know that. Com on Thisara. New coach can’t perform miracles but you guys have to perform well in the field. Look at you; you are not consistent. In the first match with Zimbabwe you batted well. But you lost concentration and gave up your wicket at a crucial time. As an experienced player you should have guided the side (youngsters) to victory. In the process SL lost to Zim by 12 runs. Take Angelo Matthews. He is always in the injury list. Just few days before the current Bangladesh tour he was suddenly declared fit (I would like to challenge the wisdom of officials who declared Angelo Matthews fit) and made as captain of the Limited Over side. What he did? He made questionable bowling changes. In this particular match, Matthews wasted 62 balls to score just 42 runs. Everyone knows Matthews is selfish and scores only to remain in the team. After one match he complained about his famous hamstring injury and not in the team. Cahndimal has to step in. Matthews is a good test cricketer and he should remain as a specialized test batsmen (he is not an all rounder anymore; because he cant bowl long spells. Then, take the Sri Lankas’ last over where Bangladesh scored some 18 runs! Last over should be given to someone who can bowl in line and length. This guy sprayed his balls all over and even tail endears of Bangladesh batsmen scored 6 s. Take Malinga he is our strike bowler. 60% fit Malingo is better than 100% fit present bowlers. Our cricket pandiths say Malinga took only 10 wickets in last 10 matches. But statistics say 12 catches were drooped by our great fielders when Maliga balled. Yes, it is unfair to blame the new coach Hathuru, but I feel our cricketers are not giving 100% to him. Come on Thisara pull your socks up and give Sri Lanka fans something to be proud of.
