No change in opposition leadership – Ranil
There will be no change in the Opposition leadership, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe today stated in parliament. Answering a question raised by Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena, Wickremasinghe said that what the country needed now was a change in government and not a change within the opposition.
Gunawardena referred to the statement made by UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella that there was a proposal to appoint two different persons for the UNP leadership and opposition leader post. Gunawardena maintained that while preparing the budget for next year the government has assumed that the UNP leadership and opposition leadership would remain with one person, and to inform the parliament of any such change.
To this Wickremasinghe strongly maintained that there will not be any change in the UNP or opposition leadership.

I assume, we need third force honest leadership…
For example: In Pakistan Imran Khan become very getting very strong against PPP and PML-N both main parties. Imran Khan is hoest leader and he need Change in the country, therefore 90% of youth behind him for regiem change even he is getting very goos support from TV & Internet channels. As same we need honest leader in the nation for change. Other wise we going to be the same rest of the life…Just my opinion only.

We already have a very good leader in MR. We honour him for saving Motherlanka from the most heinous terrorist force in the whole world, the LTTE, who were totally anihilated by our Hon President, defying orders of the imperial West to stop, due to their vested interests in saving ‘tiger skins’. The majority of our ONE NATION is grateful for this alone. Hence they elected MR for a 2nd term as President, by a huge margin. They also elected UPFA to govern the country by a huge margin. UPFA also won the Local Elections by a huge margin. This is the reward given by a grateful ONE Nation.
However, being human, MR does make mistakes, such as kudu-D incident, when out of misplaced loyalty, he helped kudu-D escape justice for alleged murder. Perhaps kudu-D has some hold on him and GR. This is no reason to condemn the man wholesale. We need to support and thank him for the vast development he has been able to provide the country on fast-track. SL is indeed developing fast as acknowledged by the West itself, though grudgingly, while some countries in the West are in economic doldrums. Hence we do not need a change in UPFA leadership but a change in opposition leadership might be helpful. At the moment, it is the public who plays the role of ‘Opposition’ to correct UPFA when it goes astray.
The pity is we do not have a decent Opposition. The paltry few who form the ‘Opposition’ are a selfish, miserable lot, with no loyalty to Motherlanka. The public has absolutely no trust in them. Their loyalty is to the foreign imperialists for money, because they are an utterly corrupt lot. There should be a law to prevent political parties being ‘bought’ through funding by foreign governments to subvert our country for their vested interests.
SL IS NOT FOR SALE TO ANY FOREIGN GOVERNMENT TO BE RUN ACCORDING TO THEIR AGENDAS FOR THEIR VESTED INTERESTS.
Nicholas,
Wish to respond point by point to you.
MR good leader….that’s your own judgement. please do keep it to yourself.
saved mother lanka …..achieved his genocidal agenda by eliminating >40,000 civilians at great cost to the taxpayer.
elected for the 2nd term…..the 60 ballot papers marked to the opposition candidate found in a rubbish bin tell the extent of rigging that took place.
mistakes.. kudu duminda incident ….. this is not a mistake. This is his way of governance relying on drug barons for survival.
this is no reason to condemn the man wholesale…. why not? I am a voter; I do have the right to be critical of leadership behaviour.
SL is developing fast… the islandwide street protests by vegetable vendors and the number of mothers slaving for oil sheiks to make a living tell the story.
change in opposition leadership…. the wimp should go. but the contender is a MR bootlicker extraordinaire !!
Pity we don’t have an opposition…. the sinhala polity is incapable of leadership. there are 17 million sinhala buddhists in Sri Lanka. Pity the polity cannot find an upright and hones and well behaved person for leadership.
SL not for sale…. thank God for that. Excreta is not a sellable commodity and that’s what our country is under Blue Brother leadership.
We need our country go in right direction. When the Govt is too strong we can’t go to that aim. Its wrong that always the main opposition should be UNP. Someone really required to bring new front and break this chain. We need good opposition. If Ranil stand infront as rock why bother, create new party and gain the people’s will. Country should go right direction… not old directions…
well said Fredrick,
It seems that Nicholas Dias is a Victim of Kudu Duminda.
Dear All, when we talk or debate on anything, we have to analyze two side of stories, then we will get a clear picture or close results which one is correct. When we are within the frame of group, whatever we do feel its correct, even not ready to take any one feedback, that mean one men show. However, people can share their opinion whatever they feel, but need to think thrice before we share with others always.
That’s what I says, we need third force leader in future rether then current system. We have to think always & need new leadership, dynamic leadership, positive thinker, honest future leader. Example: any nation vice president or prime minster should be dynamic one for tomorrow leader, but in our nation we dont have specially in PA no second leader, if you take UNP, they have cat & dog fight between leadership, therefore unable to find solution within them how they going to lead a nation.
Therefore, we have to think about new leadership for tomorrow & our future. That’s waht I had mentioned regarding IMRAN KHAN of Pakistan, why am saying this, Imran had earned money from cricket and he brought into the country and he build cancer hospital and now under process for University, that mean he is doing his social work without holding any govenment position, but other political persons take his money from Pakistan to abroad bank. Therefore, I realy feel Imran is better leader then rest of the leaders in Pakistan. We need a similar leader to our nation. Think always wider and out side the box and choose for the best.
When we debate on any subject, it should be specific, measurable, realist, achievable and Timebound.
So let’s bring “Waseem Akram” here as a leader…;-)
The Mahanayake Thers wrote to Ranil the wimp yesterday requesting step down.
That is gross interference in the internal affairs of the UNP.
As a card carrying member of the UNP, I would like to see new blood in leadership. I have identified Buddhika Pathirana as a potential candidate.
Amden,
Ane moda gembo this is not a cricket match
People free to say what they want but it’s readers to think regarding the opinion, when we debate try to learn some thing from others because no one is perfect. “knowledge is power”
Now the cat is out of the bag! Freidrich M is by his own admission, not only a hybrid/crossbreed of German extraction but also UNP ‘card-carrying member’. Heil Freidrich! I hope you are also not a neo-Nazi. Anyway now I understand why you are so unpatriotic and pro imperial West. Your strong anti-UPFA stand, whatever good they do for our Motherland, goes unappreciated by you and your ilk because you are pro-imperial West and a UNP fee-paying member, trotting out UNP propaganda and disinformation.
Shame on you Freidrich! You are totally unpatriotic! Are you so blind or wearing green-tinted glasses that you cannot see the the fast track development taking place all over the country? Even the West grudgingly acknowledges the immense development taking place in SL while the West’s own economy is in the doldrums.
Hon Mahinda Rajapaksa is the best political leader we have had sincce DS Senanayake. MR is courageous, heroic, patriotic, pro-active and intelligent, dedicated to serve his Motherland. His Mahinda Chintanaya policy to eradicate the evil VP and terrorist LTTE totally from the face of SL, as the first phase, is brilliant and courageous in the face of the wrath of imperial West for vested interests. His MC Idiri Dekma, as the second phase, to develop our country on fast track and set it on road to economic victory is superb! We are winning under MR and UPFA governance. Under the MCID, combatting racial discrimination has been given high priority. The aim is to make SL, ONE COUNTRY ONE NATION.
I am very much encouraged and heartened by Demala Chelvam’s admission that 99.99% of the SL Tamils reject TNA call for ‘separatism’ but seek simply to live in dignity and peace to prosper. Under LTTE the Tamils in Kilinochchi were herded like cattle to breed children for his terrorist ‘army’. They were his slaves. They were denied their dignity, freedom, and future prospects to develop by the heinous VP and the LTTE. They leapt for joy when the heroic SL army under the Commander-in-Chief MR, the Defence Sec GR and the Defence Forces commanders liberated them in Humanitarian Operation, the world’s greatest hostage rescue operation. Even a LTTE official now residing in UK with his family has admitted all genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed by VP and the LTTE only. He exempted the SL Defence Forces of genocide as a vile lie. He freely gave his account to the British daily, The Independent, recently. Today, the liberated SL Tamil citizens are enjoying the taste of true freedom and peace to develop under the brilliant leadership of MR and UPFA govt. The North and East are being fast devloped for our fellow SL citizens, the Tamils and the Muslims. Even in USA, millions of Americans are suffering hardship, unemployment and poverty on a scale not seen in SL among all our communities.
Freidrich, this is not my opinion, it is the view of 70% of the population who elected MR for a 2nd Term as President and UPFA in General and Local Elections by thumping majorities. All your talk of election fraud is wild propaganda/disinformation trotted out by UNP/JVP/TNA enemies of the patriotic Nation. For the losers, the ‘grapes are of course sour’.
Dear Readers,
With apologies to my about a week’s abscence due to family commitments, let me join you all on the tcpic “There is no change in opposition leadership- Ranil”.This is a very good assertion by the Hon. Leader of the Opposition. He must clamp both his iron-booted feet down and chase all his detractors out of sight (as he did to SP)and get his chosen band of WC members to support him to continue as leader for rmany more years.UNP which boasted of having the largest enbloc voters will slowly grind irself to a shameful unnatural death. Our counntry will be poorer in the process as UNP has to be there as the alternate choice.Ranil is very conspicuosly pushing the UNP down the hill.
Dear AUJ,
Welcome! We are delighted to have you back. Hope more people will contribute their views to this forum for healthy debate.
Karu is just SP’s tool to displace RW. He is a senior politician with some experience. But he is not a better leader for UNP. He looks like a dead goat. SP is hoping that through Karu, RW can be displaced and then Karu will handover the baton to him. Fat chance! SP is the worst possible leader for SL!
Do we really need a change in leadership in SL? Ofcourse not! Hon MR is doing an excellent job at the helm. Millions of ordinary voters in the country recognise this and will go on supporting him and his govt for many more years, for economic victory and development on fast track in all directions. We have a grateful and intelligent nation.
AUJ,
I am confused by your Blog 13.
In the mid section you say the current wimpy leader should put his feet down and chase his detractors.
In the end you say the wimp is driving the UNP down the hill.
Please clarify.
I have been a card carrying member of the UNP for over 40 years. My membership was suspended during the RP leadership of the UNP because I began to question the powers that were.
My membership was reinstated by the DBJ leadership.
Over the past 10 years, I am troubled by the rapidly declining voter base of the party which at one time, stood at 60% of the voting population.
The current leadership triumvirate, RW, TA and RK, are insincere. They are surrounded by deadwood. RW is under the jackboots of the Blue brothers. He thinks he is smart and will have the last laugh but such cheap politicking is neither appreciated nor will it bear positive outcomes.
I think this KJ drama is being enacted at the behest of the Blur Brothers when they realised that RW has in the recent months got some mileage.
The Blue Brothers are supported by Kili Maharaja and Tiran Alles; the latter is pretty much focussed on keeping SF behind bars for as long as possible.
The best RW could do is to handover leadership to someone young and untainted; Buddhika Pathirana is an apt candidate. He has no opposition within the party (except perhaps from the deadwood oldies).
Buddhika has the energy and the sincerity. Though he is not of Royal lineage, he can rapidly develop into a capable leader. He will also be able to steer away from remnants of the RP era who are manipulating leadership aspirations with ill gotten wealth.
