POLICE UNIFORM MUST CHANG IN TO BLUE COLOUR WITH SATAKAYA.
The Police Chief is committed to a timeframe of two weeks for response.
Mr G.G. Ponnambalam Jnr. (known to everyone as Kumar Ponnambalam) was involved in human rights for many years. He was a leading lawyer in Colombo. Gunmen assassinated him in cold blood on 5th January 2000 in Wellawatta in Colombo.
Mr Ponnambalam, as a prominent expert and able criminal lawyer defended thousands of Tamil people, over many years, who suffered gross and systematic violations of human rights at the hands of the Sri Lankan government security forces – the Special Task Force, the Army and the Navy. The Attorney-General Department has stated that Mr Ponnambalam held 98% of the (PTA) cases, which went
through their department, which is virtually equivalent to the entire number of cases fought by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Mr Ponnambalam filed many reports on important human rights cases. These include the internationally known case of gang-rape and murder of Krishanthi Kumaraswamy, which led to the eventual revelation of the eighteen mass graves, including Chemmani, in the Jaffna Peninsula.
His work became a challenge to the Sri Lankan government, which with its record of massive human rights violations amounting to genocide, met in him a force to be reckoned with.
Mr Ponnambalam was a brave and tireless champion of civil and political rights, and fundamental human rights. He was not afraid to speak out on Human rights and this has cost him his life. His assassination marks a tragic loss for all who strive for the cause of justice and human rights.
Can the Police Chief brief the World on where the investigations are, in relation to this important assasination?
This direct contact with IGP through a special web-site is a very good idea. But what about direct access to majority of ordinary citizens, who are not sophisticated enough with computers in their homes? Surely they should also have direct access to the IGP through a special phone number and guaranteed quick response which is not tainted with corruption.
An excellent initative from the Police Chief.
He has promised a 2 week turnaround time for any enquiry.
Here is Enquiry No 1.:

MR POLICE CHIEF, YOUR POLICE FORCE HAS BEEN INVESTIGATING THIS CASE, I BELIEVE, FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS. COULD WE, THE CITIZENS OF THE WORLD, HAVE A BRIFING ON WHERE YOU ARE AT WITH THE INVESTIGATIONS?
DC, may I suggest that you contact the IGP with your query through the email address he has published, and not through ONLANKA.
Do not forget VP has assassinated many leading Tamil politicians and illuminaries over disagreements with him. He even killed his own cousin,’Mahattaya’ his second-in-command. Ananda Sangaree managed to escape by hiding and special body guard. So did Devananda, Karuna, Pillaiyan and a few others who fled to the protection of GOSL. Without hard evidence it is difficult to conclude who killed Ponnambalam. He may have even had a client who had fallen-out with him for mishandling a case. Who knows? The fact that he was a leading human rights lawyer defending Tamils does not necessarily mean the GOSL is implicated.
Dear Inspector General of Police,
Five male Tamil students were killed in Trincomalee, a big harbor town on the Northeast coast under the control of and heavily garrisoned by the Sri Lankan armed forces on January 2, 2006. The area where the incident took place held an estimated 50 military personnel, including Navy checkpoints on each side, and a police superintendent was in the vicinity.
12 Special Task Force (STF – militarized police) members who were initially arrested were quickly released.
Could you please brief the World on the progress of investigations into this case, as promised, within 2 weeks.
Thanking you in anticipation of your excellent response as assured.
