A member of the Peliyagoda Urban Council, J. Chamila Sandaruwan, has been found shot dead inside his car at Tyre Corporation Junction in Dalugama, Kelaniya this morning, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
The UPFA member was reportedly shot several times by an unknown gunman while he was driving the vehicle which had later crashed into a wall in the roadside following the shooting.
The deceased, a 23-year-old resident of Peliyagoda, was elected to the Urban Council from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in 2011.
He had appeared before the Mahara magistrate’s court this morning over a case and was returning home alone after dropping off his parents when the shooting had taken place.

The Citizens of Peliyagoda have lost a capable leader as a result of this incident.
The late Peliyagoda Urban Councillor, J. Chamila Sandaruwan became a member of the Council at the age of 23 and was providing yeoman service to the Peliyagoda community until this most unfortunate incident.
The late Councillor, J. Chamila Sandaruwan was right on track to becoming the Mayor of Peliyagoda in his second term and would have provided superior leadership to the entire council and the ratepayers in line with the standards set by His Worship the Mayor of Hambantota.
Another loss to society, a loss that cannot be retrieved.
My condolences to the residents of Peliyagoda, to Dr Mervyn Silva who is the late Sandaruwan’s mentor and the beloved family of the late Mr Sandaruwan.
May he attain Nibbana.
