Prices of rice, fried rice, biriyani and kottu had been increased by Rs. 10 with immediate effect following the recent VAT increase, Chairman of the All-Island Canteen Owners’ Association, Asela Sampath told The Island yesterday.
He said that the VAT increase from 11 percent to 15 percent had compelled eatery owners jack up prices as there was no other way of recovering the loss.
He said the prices of all bakery products except that of bread had been increased.

Its about time the Sri Lankan poulation realizes that prices are not going to come down no matter who comes in to power. All you who were fooled with Promises of reducing prices of food ,and votes are stupid if you voted based on the false promises. Also propmises of having a honest administration were made to fool you.
RW and My3 are doing exaxctly what all politicians in Sri Lanka have been doing for ages. At least MR did some things that the people can see and enjoy.
“The prices of tea and hoppers were reduced because of the price reduction of gas, sugar, milk powder, electricity and kerosene oil. I understand that a cup of milk tea can be sold for Rs. 25 and a plain hopper at Rs.10” Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Rumy Marzook told the Sunday Times.” This was year ago. But now every thing is being increased (owing to VAT). However the ordinary folks in Sri Lanka should not eat Buriani, Fried Rice & Kottu Roty. They should resort to eating rice wrapped with banana leaves which is much affordable!
