President instructs Police & Security forces to control underworld gangs
President Maithripala Sirisena has given strict instructions to the police and security forces to take effective actions under a joint plan to control the underworld gangs which are raising their heads recently in the country.
He made these remarks participating in the annual prize giving ceremony of the Sucharitha Dhamma School, Narahenpita, today (06).
The President emphasized that he will not allow any criminal to do any kind of harm to the public.
He also pointed out that the guidance and advices provided by the Dhamma schools are vital to take forward the country in a better and an exemplary way. The President further said that the Buddhist philosophy is the basis to make this country a better one.
Even though many countries in the world achieved the physical development, the spiritual happiness of the people living there is at a very low level and as a result of that at present there is a tendency to practice Buddhist philosophy in these countries too.
“ The Buddhist philosophy gives an influential example to promote reconciliation among the nationals,” he added.
The President presented certificates to the students of the Dhamma School during the event.
The Mahasangha including the most Venerable Welamitiyawe Kusala Dhamma Thero, Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero, Ministers Vajira Abeywardana, Daya Gamage and others participated on this occasion.

Most of the underworld gangs were were established and groomed by the MaRa regime. Now they are under no control and thus playing havock. Gota has a few we are told, in hibernation though.
The best strategy is get ranils gestapo to deal with situation at least they will get enough experience to deal with contingencies to come.
Buddhism is idealistic just because Ven Gnasara invoked set pirith on some gangster that does not mean that most of the killers are buddhists it is possible but not necessary probable. Invariably buddhists are at the receiving end of terror activities.
So there mr president
Udu.
Come on ! You are such a biased man. The underworld has been around for a long time and every political party has a fair share of them .I agree that MR did some wrong things in his time but everything that is bad and wrong can not be blamed on MR. It seems to me that you a grudge with the Rajapakse”s.
It will be nice to read stuff that is not totally biased and sometimes ridiculous . So try to not to be so Biased and lets hope that at least one of the Rajapakses’s will be imprisoned soon or else you will look the ultimate fool.
Fernando,
During the previous regime gangs cropped up in illegal dealings and trade of alcohol, drugs, arms and what not flourishing with the support of the regime. You cannot deny that. Further MaRa influence has links and corrupted every sector of the community most importantly the judiciary. This is what is delaying in meting out justice to the clan. Be patient. Previously there was corruption under the rule of JR, Bandaranayaka, Premadasa etc but not as bad as during the Rajapaksa era.
Not only CONTROL Mr President. We need a Zero Tolerance policy. Policy to put an end politicians using criminal gangs for their own benefits.
of the bandaranayaka’s only chandrika had to deal with the liberation, then Premadasa did little to thwart terrorism and if i remember right it was the worst of times and had several political luminaries go up in flames and JRJ played safe and died naturally so U’s argument does not hold.
