President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed relevant authorities to urgently launch a programme to promote the consumption of liquid milk in Sri Lanka. He made these instructions following the inspection at the Milko Industrial Complex in Polonnaruwa.
The President pointed out that government is ready to provide facilities for dairy farmers to increase the milk production. Therefore the local dairy farmer should be uplifted instead of importing milk powder. Educational and media campaigns should be launched to popularise liquid milk among consumers.
Sri Lanka annually imports more than 75 thousand metric tons of milk powder. Foreign exchange amounting to 400 million dollars has to be spent on this purpose. The President said that the saved foreign exchange can be used for development purposes. Milko factory is also producing preserved milk for the first time. The President inspected the machine worth 315 million rupees imported from Finland to increase the production capacity. Deputy Minister H.R. Mitrapala and Milko Chairman Sunil Wickramasinghe also participated in the occasion.
It is expected there will be an increase of the milk production at the Polonnaruwa farm of the National Livestock Development Board anticipates up to 40,000 liters per day by raising 2500 cows on an area of 2500 acres. The cabinet has given its approval for the proposal.

Drinking milk is good for growing children especially. It is rich in calcium and vitamin D, necessary for bone development. But it has to be semi skimmed milk to be free of much of its fat content. Semi skimmed milk has only 4% fat. Animal fat is responsible for cholesterol build up in the blood vessels, leading to heart attack, high blood pressure and strokes.
The milk has to be filtered and sterilised to remove bacteria to make its shelf/fridge life longer. I hope our milk industry can achieve this.
.. and there should be a systematic network for distribution,if not at the doorstep then atleast at all the cooperative stores where possible.
Mr Dias, could you please keep you pea sized wisdom on dairy products to yourself. It is sad to note your ignorance being published in a public forum.
This company made from finland,i am so happy that we got high technical equiptment our country.
Go go sri lanka forward!
Pradeep,
How dare you insult ND the conscience of the nation as declared by fellow blogger Demala Selvan. ND is our unchallenged leader, a walking encyclopaedia. He has special authority from the Administrator to cull unruly bloggers including anyone who talks ill of the regime. You ought to be careful in what you say. Wisdom is oozing like milk out of the geriatric in his twilight years. May be there is something for us inferiors to learn from his knowledge of milk. You ought to appologise to him. I demand!
Hey Udurawana,
Nicholas may have earned the “conscience of the Nation” award from LTT Rump, Dem Chelvan; he may have accolades from elsewhere.
It doesn’t matter to me.
Nicholas appears to be a “know all”. As you know, these “know all’s” live in their own cocoon ranting unverified rubbish about everything in this World and even beyond.
Nicholas is an “expert” in World Affairs. His rubbish theories are not worth the space they occupy in this blog.
Now he gets on to the dairy industry. He pretends to know what’s good for the nation.
The amount of mountainous rubbish he disseminates in his blog are more than enough to turn Paul Joseph Goebbels in his grave.
Look at the way he responds to you.
So Udurawana, I will read every word of his rubbish and tear his facade into bits. That’s my life mission.
Pradeep,
Good luck to you in your effort to tame “ND the know all, walking encyclopaedia”. The man is running amock just as they do in their last days. He is nothig but all f… and no s… He seeks the Administrator’s help like a child running to the mum, when cornered.
The guy pretends to be neutral but runs wild when talking about the attrocities of MR and his goons. The man suffers from selective amnesia.
Dear AUJ,
Welcome back! I am sory to hear you were unwell for a while. I have taken to drinking less cofee and tea and more water, infact 8 glasses of water daily. My doctor has advised me to do so in order to flush out the system, ie to de-toxify, remove toxins from the blood stream. Coupled with light exercise and healthy diet with more fruit should keep you in good shape.
‘Udu’ was called by someone ‘polmudda’. He contributes nothing worthwhile to this forum but to insult others and criticise what others write. He is joined by another of the same ilk calling himself ‘Pradeep’. Not that he sheds any ‘light’ either to enlighten us. In blog 3, he ‘enlightens’ us by insulting me, in response to my blog 1. He hasn’t ‘enlightened’ us with more knowledge on milk anyway. JVP/JAM types are also similar anarchists, who are only good at criticising the GOSL with no constructive solutions. The best solution is to ignore them.
I bought fresh milk from a supermarket a few times but has stopped now, because it didn’t stay fresh in the fridge more than 2 days. I have gone back to using powdered milk again. The problem is the milk hasn’t been filtered and sterilised properly to rid it of the bacteria. I hope the Finnish company provide us better fresh milk.
