Recalling ‘the saddest day in Lankan Police history’
June 11, 1990 according to many is the saddest day in the history of Sri Lankan Police. It is the day, the LTTE massacred over 600 unarmed policemen from several police stations in the East, who surrendered allegedly following a request from the very top in the political hierarchy.
In a most cowardly way the LTTE murdered unarmed police personnel, after giving an assurance that they would not be harmed, to the political leaders with whom they were engaged in so-called peace talks at that time.
According to eye-witness accounts Policemen who surrendered heeding the call of their superiors were taken into the jungles blindfolded, hands tied behind their backs and shot at close range with bullets to the back of their heads.
Twenty one years hence the gruesome incident lingers in the minds of not only the kith and kin of the murdered policemen but in many others as well. At a time when all Sri Lankans are enjoying the dividends of peace due to the sacrifices made by such heroes and many others like them, it is the duty of all to ensure that they do not remain forgotten heroes.
In 1990 as peace talks between the LTTE and the then government led by President R. Premadasa began to wane, the LTTE demanded the surrender of police stations in the East on June 11, 1990.
The LTTE surrounded police stations in Batticaloa, Vellaveli, Kalmunai, Valachenai, Kalawnchikudi, Samanthurai, Eravur and Akkaraipattu. By the end of the day most of the police stations surrendered to the LTTE, allegedly heeding calls from the top to do so.
According to some reports on June 11, the LTTE ordered police personnel in the Eastern province to vacate all police stations with their families by 2.30 pm, or face the consequences.
It is reported that more than 800 police personnel were abducted by the LTTE later. Some had escaped but the majority of them had been murdered in cold blood.
Eye-witnesses have said that they were lined up and shot with their hands tied behind their backs.
Subsequently the LTTE is reported to have taken control of a number of police stations, including Batticaloa, Vellaveli, Kalmunai, Valachenai, Kalawnchikudi, Samanthurai, Eravur and Akkaraipattu.
Later the LTTE also stormed stations in the Jaffna district and ordered the policemen to leave, stations at Kankesanthurai, Valvetiturai, Point Pedro, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Murunkan.
On June 15, the LTTE had attacked the police stations at Elephant Pass in the Jaffna district and Mud Cove in the Trincomalee district. Also, the LTTE attacked several army camps in the area.
According to reports Police officers laid down their arms after being promised safe conduct and subsequent release.
The policemen had surrendered following alleged orders because the political leadership at the time had thought that they could re-invigorate the talks with the LTTE which was in the wane during the time.
And they thought by doing so they could avoid armed confrontation. That was, the way the LTTE effectively used negotiation as a tactical ploy to achieve certain politico/military advantages.
The LTTE were holding talks with the then government. They were doing so since the IPKF left the shores of Sri Lanka, but returned to armed conflict soon after the departure of the IPKF having massacred over 600 policemen, marking the beginning of another phase of the so-called ealam war.
Recently, retired SSP Tassy Seneviratne had recalled incidents concerning the massacre of more than 600 policemen in the East during his testimony to the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
Answering queries the retired police officer had told the LLRC that the police then had even failed to conduct a proper inquiry into the incident fearing the wrath of the political hierarchy at the time, the media reported.
This is not the only atrocity done by the LTTE during their reign of terror spanning 30 long years. The enormity of the death and destruction caused by them is well documented and would never be forgotten.
The LTTE massacred village’s, killed pregnant women and children, sent suicide bombers to public venues. This is why the world is a better place without terrorists.
So let’s not forget that this future of hope is built upon the sacrifices made by many like the 600 plus police officers who laid down their lives in June 11, 1990.

R Premadasa is largely to blame for dancing with the devil, VP. He was blasted sky high by VP at the end when he realised he was of no more use to him to realise his military objective of eelam. R Premadas deserved to die for the evil he inflicted on the noble Sinhala race. He is a thuppahi President with very littl education. He was cunning and devoid of patriotic feelings. He was power hungry and did everything to re-inforce and hold on to power. LTTE did us a favour in ridding us of this fool. Ranil is another clown and a weak leader who is power hungry and cunning. He is utterly weak who will sell his own wife for a bowl of kenda.
Imperial West shed no tears, did not denounce as a war crime this heinous act of VP in massacring the unarmed surrendered STF, 600-800 of them. UN did not seek his arrest by a special expeditionary force and extradition to Hague for justice. This is because imperial West covertly supported LTTE for vested interests. The imperial West is doing the opposite today. They are trying to label the Hon President, the Hon Defence Secretary and the heroic Generals of alleged war crimes on trumped-up false evidence provided by diaspora LTTE and their hired stooges in SL and abroad. Imperial West is a proven two-faced evil liar, never to be trusted.
Isn’t it high time that June 11th is commemorated every year in honour of the heroic STF personnel who were brutally massacred by the LTTE, by religious observances to grant them eternal happiness? A war memorial should be erected for them in the place they were brutally massacred? Their dependents should be specially honoured and aided by the government. They should be granted posthumous honours for their heroism by the government.
That’s not a wonder done by fool miserable dogs of UNP…!
The wonder is still many people have blinded to vote that shit UNP wild dogs…!
The guy who allegedly lead the massacre is a Cabinet Minister!

Do you also think to voice others…?
You might be definitly a Slaver of “gods myth”…!
That’s why you express yourself with this narrow & shallow way which’s out of the fact…!

Fucking jesus never be happy till you put into the HELL…!
Dear Amden,
Hon Karuna and CM Pillyan were directly involved in LTT terrorism.
The late Mr VP not only spilt blood of the innocents but invented the Sun God Brand Super Bra loaded with dynamite and a trigger switch.
Hon RW was directly involved in the Batalanda torture cells.
The Late PM, Hon Mrs SB was directly involved in the massacre that followed the uprising in 1971.
The Late Ranjan W was involved in the massacres that took place in the 1980’s.
The current leaders are directly invloved in the massacre of 2008/09.
We are a nation of blood thirsty war lords who care two hoots about human lives. What we need is a moral regeneration. There’s no one who can lead this moral regeneration.
Can we, the Onlanka Bloggers (Nicholas Dias, Guru Satyadasa, Julian Siriwardena, Demala Chelvan, yourself, myself and Pillayan the blogger, Manjula, Mohammed and Rani) form a movement to lead the moral regeneration?
K & P changed sides because they were under threat from VP. They are survivors. K is a crafty man who can change side again to the winning side to survive. K&P were behind the slaughter of 600-800 STF who were ordered to surrender by the fool RP. K & P are still hardcore eelamists, who are covertly working against the government to establish eelam by the backdoor. In time, they may even plot Hon President’s assassination from within, if they don’t get their eelam. KP is another kotiya who was abducted from Thailand and brought here. He has done f…all to seize the LTTE assets. KP is having a laugh! He is probably in a safehouse enjoying all the creature comforts. Hon MR should end this farce and bring KP before the courts. He should swing for his crimes. He must rule with an iron fist. No mercy to the LTTE terrorists! Did Obama show mercy to Osama?
Nicholas Dias/ Amenda
What ever said and done. Should we give current status to blood suckers like Karuna,KP and Pilliarran. These fellows should be hanged.
Nicolas Dias , Iam happy to see your last comment. Well said buddy
I do not agree with the view of F ‘Mahakotiya’. He said, “The current leaders are directly involved in the massacre of 2008/9.” What rubbish! The wanton blood lust was shown by VP when he slaughtered his own hostages as they fled to the SL army side across Nandikadal lagoon. The LTTE suicide squads mingled with the Tamil hostages as they fled and detonated their bombs amidst them to kill them as well as their rescuers, the SL army personnel. Some LTTE cadres sprayed their machine guns on the hostages as they fled. It was clearly seen by the whole world through the images sent by unmanned spy planes that flew overhead. Many of our heroic soldiers sacrificed their lives in the rescue mission as they used small arms and not heavy weapons on the specific orders of Hon President, to avoid civilian casualties. We are the only country who has ever done such a brave deed to rescue 320,000 Tamil hostages. F ‘Mahakoitya’ is now trying to twist historical facts with distortion of truth. It doesn’t work mate!
Nico…!
Here someone who has commented as Amden is not me..! This blind man confuse here with using same nic name. He might be an ill person who can’t be independent here. I remind this to all as the one who slams to “gods myth”..
Dear Nicholas,
In my blog (Blog #8), there are 6 references to atrocities committed by SL leaadership. You object to 1 of the 6 instances and the 1 instance where you raise objections relates to killing of tamils.
If VP was a bloodthirsty maniac, Rohana Wijeweera was one too.
Does this mean that you accept slaughter of innocent tamils under the guise of eliminating terrorism but be silent on the slaughter of innocent Sinhala youth under the guise of eliminating an insurgent uprising?
Nicholas, the Sri Lankan nation and its polity have blood on its hands and need to be cleansed to achieve true emancipation.
We must bring about the toughest anti-weapon possession laws against private persons. We must ban all guns and weapons. We must steadily dismantle our armed forces (no one in the world is going to invade us) and create effective border patrol. We should re-introduce capital punishment for a period of, say, 20 years. We must make religious education compulsory. We must guarantee work to all able persons.
Frederick…
no killing should be justified here at all…! that’s why i slam & damn this wild animal jvp ponnas…! they’re useless youth killers still continue to act on evils wish….!
even the war on terror has no excuse of killings BUT doing so MR has actually, really, truly, practically avoided countless mass killings in future & have brought the PEACE into mass folk…! that’s the important deference here…!
so the facts are nothing to hide & very clear to all who are wise enough to understand…!…ok…!!!!!
Frederick,
There are some inconsistencies in your ideas.
1. You cannot steadily dismantle armed forces and in the same time to have an effective border patrol. Border patrol is not touring around for fun. They must be armed, trained, cultured and lead as armed forces. On the other hand having a navy only without an army and air force is also a joke.
2. No one is going to invade Sri Lanka is a myth since Dutch, Hollend, British and Indian basterds have already invaded us many times before. Not only outsiders, but our own tamil people invaded (or tried to eat a pieces of us). Therefore we need a very strong armed force.
3. Re-introducing capital punishment and making religious education compulsory are also contrary to each other. No religious education will advocate to kill people (regardless of their crime) by hanging.
4. Guaranteeing work to all able persons is a nice dream to everyone in the world, only if some one can make suggestions how to achieve it and to sustain it. No nation in the world has achieved it yet. Just to say “I want to land on Jupitor” is one thing (and very easy to say) but telling exactly how to go to Jupitor is another (leave it to someone else, I am only here to make demands and wining!).
