Scholarship exam to be replaced with Grade 8 exam – President
President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said the Year 5 Scholarship Examination will be replaced with an examination which will be held in Grade 8.
He said an examination will be held for Grade 8 students enabling them to continue their higher education on a selected field of study.
The President said the schools will also be classified in the future and arrangements would be made to expand schools to suit these fields of study.
The President said the country’s education policy should focus equally on the examinations and creating better prospects for the student population. The President was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of a new sports complex at Mahamaya Girls’ School in Kadawatha yesterday.
The President said that the Year 5 Scholarship Examination would be annulled and a new education system put in place to provide an opportunity for students to shape their future according to their talents.
“The new system further aims to guide students into an education system which suits an innovative and green economy thus ending an era where Bachelors of Arts graduates protest on the roads,” President Sirisena said.

Poor children. It is sad to see these children want enjoy their childhood like playing out doors with their friends rather than cramming meaningless books like book worms.
It is sad to see how hard the kids are learning these days. But at the same time everyone should realize that the generation grown with those exams became creme of the society. It is proven that the quality of education in Sri Lanka is far better than many Asian countries.
Many poor families, finding away to go to a better school with scholarship programs.
When government takes such decisions, they should make sure that the facilities in all the schools should be same. Every village should have a school with better teachers and all the relevant facilities.
Before taking effect on such decisions, surroundings should be managed rather than working with feelings.
Whole country is running without proper knowledge.
It is correct time to discard all Old aged politicians from the parliament ASAP.
Maraya If the quality of education in Sri Lanka is far better than many Asian countries why is Sri Lanka in such bad, sorry state. I don’t think you have been to Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand. If the education is so great why our graduates end up in sweeping roads and cleaning toilets in foreign countries. Only thing they can do better is giving rag to follow students and get beaten up by police for demonstrations.
@Ranjith, After seeing your comment I felt so sorry about you my dear friend.
I have few questions for you:
1. Where did you study? (in Sri Lanka? Govt school? or private??)
2. Why are you comparing 5th Grade Scholarship and Graduates?
3. have you ever worked in outside the country with country mates? Did you ever heard from any management how quality is Sri Lankan’s work?
4. Have you ever seen the quality of a Indian? Output of an Indian? (to any work)
I’ve been to all the countries you have stated, and I have first hand experience in one of the country stated too.
There’s no issue with education is SL. Only issue with the governing bodies. If you take bad decisions, it will provide the returns after 10-15 years, not now.
In rural areas, there are schools which has only handful of students. They do not have a method to learn in proper environment, no good teachers after certain grades. Sometime same teacher, for all the subjects.
Do you think its fair for them to get educated like that and end up in the same village?
After stopping this, how they find a good school for them to go to better heights?
Its correct that too much burdens for the kids at younger ages.
But this is not what should happen. Ministry should study the whole scenario and whats the outcome till 100 years. Ministers kids will get educated in high standard schools, overseas etc. But the poor families?
