SJB strengthened Podujana Peramuna and gave it two-thirds majority – John
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was Cock-A-Hoop about its performance at Wednesday’s General Election, but in reality it helped the Podujana Peramuna obtain a two-thirds majority, says veteran UNPer John Ameratunga who stayed with Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP.
Asked for his views on the outcome of the polls, Ameratunga said “We respect the peoples’ wishes, but Sajith Premadasa in deciding to break away from the UNP, has failed to achieve what should have been his first objective – preventing the Podujana Peramuna from getting two-thirds of the seats in Parliament.”
He pointed out that history has proved the party winning the Presidential Election would go on to win the Parliamentary polls that followed.
“Sajith knew he cannot become the Prime Minister this time. So the next best thing he should have done was to ensure that the Rajapaksas did not get a majority that would enable them to reverse all the democratic gains achieved through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. The SJB was meant to be a UNP – led alliance with Sajith as its Prime Ministerial candidate, but he made it his alliance and in the process divided the UNP”, the veteran politician lamented.
He said that if the SJB had contested as a UNP-led alliance it would have secured more seats, which would have prevented the Podujana Peramuna from obtaining a two-thirds majority.
“It is evident that in this election, political parties based on policies have been overtaken by political movements”, Ameratunga noted, warning that it could lead to an unstable political situation in the years to come.

That is very good then. What Sri Lanka need at the moment is an opposition that hold the government to account. Not one that oppose in every way just for fashion or taking subcontracts from their international masters.
By the way, where has all those birds said to swarming around Mattala airport has gone? Wait and see how Rajapaksha brothers with a vision for the country develop the South West and East in few years time.
The only vision Ponil and gundas like you had for this airport that used billions of national money is to store paddy and howling Rajapaksha had wasted money. You were not even capable of thinking of a second international air port to a country that has tourism and exports as one of the major income source
Aney Booruwa!!
No you stupid senile bull, the one who strengthened SLPP and nourished it to get 2/3 majority was none other than Ponil (aka Ranil), your equally senile but unpatriotic, bungling, corrupt idiot! Here are his 3 most great ‘achievements’ (there are many others) that made sure UNP was wiped away for good eventually, which came to be on Aug 04/20:
1) During the LTTE terrorist war his ‘peace policies’ were disastrous. Always was soft on LTTE and the wide powers he allowed LTTE have (at the behest of pro-LTTE Norwegians) saw LTTE brazenly coming to Colombo and killing even military intelligence officers, bringing over 20 shiploads of weapons (while SLN was told to not interfere) and in total over 26,000 ranavirus dying due to superior firepower of the LTTE when his ‘peace talks’ failed repeatedly and eventually for good! May he burn in hell for this crime alone!
2) Allowed the biggest financial fraud (‘Bond Scam’) to happen in the nation, and dilly dallied when it was discovered without actively going after the culprits – naturally, the ones who were his friends and political stooges!
3) After the terrorist war with LTTE was was finished by Rajapaksas in 2009, there was no terrorism in Sri Lanka, but hey, Ponil with his usual soft-on-terrorist, stupid but corrupt “Muslim vote” seeking softy attitude which disregarded the clearly manifesting Islamic terrorism in the country saw the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb massacre that killed nearly 500, wounded hundreds, destroyed churches and tourist hotels and gave tourism a death blow resulting in $Billiions being lost in forex revenues!
So stupid senile bull, this should be a time for honest self-searching without blaming others! Your UNP is now wiped off permanently and I suggest without croaking nonsense, your lot join SJB under Sajith if you are interested in giving a healthy opposition to the Rajapakses’ reign, which in the interest of democracy, is an imperative especially given the 2/3 majority it will wield in the parliament!
The SJB earned 50% of votes came from minorities.
The SJB is an empty shell; John Amaratunge’s views are valid and are statistically supported.
Keep taking Vigra mate. That will stop all your frustrations.
