Sri Lanka 5th in Asia’s computer literacy

Sri Lanka is in the 5th place among the countries developed in computer literacy and information technology in a very short period. Accordingly, during the last five years the computer literacy in the country has increased from 4 percent to 30 percent.

This information was revealed when the plan of information and communication technology development from 2011 to 2016 was handed over to the President Mahinda Rajapakse at the Temple Trees recently.

The basic plan of the national information technology has been prepared as part of a Mahinda Chinthana programme, to make Sri Lanka the knowledge hub of the Asian region. The main objective of the new plan is to increase the computer literacy up to 75 percent by the year 2016.

Many plans have been made to create employment opportunities in the field of information technology such as starting 1,000 Nenasala Centres, creating information network in the fields of Agriculture, Fishing and Technical sector.

The president said at this event the Nenasala project has gained a vast progress through its implementation via religious centres. The President emphasized that it is necessary to use the information technology for the benefit of investors who comes to the island to carryout their business activities within a short period.
