Dear Sir / Madam,
It is not about wining or losing in the ICC World Cup final essentially or about who does resign as captain or vice captain of the Sri Lankan team is the pressing issue at the moment. But, wether there was anything inappropriate or illegal based on betting or match fixing is the big question mark? If this did not prevail, it is fine. But, I was genuinely surprised how easily Sri Lanka lost grip of the match when they had India in some trouble when three wickets had fallen reasonably cheaply and the way they played thereafter. Only two conclusions can be drawn. This being that pressure and quality batting of the Indian team and home support was too much for the Sri Lankan team to handle or match fixing taking place. It cannot be both, but either one of them, which is my candid and honest opinion in regard to the ICC World Cup final. Nevertheless, on as positive note, the Indian team batted positively and purposefully, with determination in comparison to a totally indiscipline and lacklustre bowling attack, which a quality club side in Australia for example, would have been able to play without too much problems, because so many poor or bad deliveries were bowled. In my view this plus the Sri Lankan captain not wanting to set attacking fields to get wickets when it was required, did surprise me a great deal, as an admirer of the great game.
Yours Sincerely,
M. R. Somasunderam.
Why did sangakkara do that? He will have to seriously think about his decision…
100% agree with m r somasunderam. Our captain didn’t want to win, I am not sure why.
Sri Lanka finished 2nd in World Champ- then captain & selectors resigned !
England finished ??? yet captain & more importantly – selectors have not resigned. Wonder what A.Cook (our leading scorer in ASHES) and our wkt kprs think of that.
Sundaram’s opinion is too “satyam &sundaram”..! But the real quez is; who can act honestly as Capt of a ‘wrecked ship’ to transport others goods.?!?!?!?
With both Kumar S and Mahela J resigning their roles in the team, I cannot see a successor.
The way Suraj Randiv was propelled into the team makes him a likely. After all, it is not capability which matters to play for or captain Sri Lanka but possibly who you know or who you are aligned with.
The best way to get over the trauma of the World Cup defeat is to appoint a Presidential Commission to investigate the events which lead to the defeat with focus on the roles played by Aravinda and Kumar S.
The President’s sincerity in wishing for SL’s win is demonstrated by waking up at 3AM on the day of the match and cracking coconuts in a leading hindu temple and also a pooja. Surely, do we want want to let down our beloved leader?
Aravinda may upgrade his luxury car (Porsche?) if he wishes but must be held accountable for his actions.
I remember abt 20yrs ago Arjuna rejected frm captaincy as admin issues. then Aravinda took it & said tht he’ll win england tour which was arranged at tht time but they lost it with Aravinda’s captaincy & later again Arjuna became the captain, after solving issues. Now the same situation going 2 repeat & The deference is Sanga is not outspoken like Arjuna. If anyone agree 2 be captain under the rubbish admin, it’ll be another mistake & just be a plaster 4 the wound. Aravinda was good batman but not as captain. So dnt expect 2 solve this with him now. Arjuna also changed with politics. Honesty & skills are very seldom at once & not remains 4 long too..! Changing a captain will not solve admin issues. Sanga’ll not resign If the captaincy had proper rights to lead the team. So if we need 2 see good cricket he should be the captain but proper RIGHTS 2 be given. If thr’s another solution then we’ve 2 let see it…!
sanga please don’t resign your captaincy.because you are the good leader to our team
I do not agree with Shiran and others.
Kumar S ceased to be the Captain of the SL Cricket Team in the World Cup final around the 25th over of the Indian innings.
If you watch the video footage, Kumar S can be seen watching motionlessly from behind the wickets, with a glassy look, hardly communicating or providing leadership to the team.
It is a significant let-down of the team; in the second half of the Indian innings, bowlers and fielders were left on their own, some shrugging their shoulders in despair and others, picking their noses.
Yes tht’s true too. But even with these issues we won more than half way of match & then we saw tht our team let them 2 win. Meanwhile president has said we’ve taken a step back 2 let enjoy indians & he has treated badly in india too. Also pakistan wanted 2 won by us. These’re signs of another reason. But captain’s issue is abt the rights of captaincy. If sanga had the proper rights as a captain, then he’ll not resign. 4 exmpl; If a captain has no rights in selection of players then how he’ll respond abt results. it’s better 4 him 2 play as not a capt. Arjuna faced the same too, more than this but was able 2 deal with. So it’s need 2 clear the rights of capt, then thr’ll be a good capt 4 sl team.
sanga pls dont resign.
u r the good captain for all time sri lanka.
we want u back.
if u leave the capatancy our team can face many prob without gd captain.
u should think about ur decision
If we say tht Sanga should be the capt, coz of his own skills not otherwise. But he can show his own skills only in his own way & not otherwise. 4 tht he must’ve captains freedom 2 work on his own way & not otherwise. Only then he could be respond 2 the results of matches, not otherwise. So he should be capt only if is provided the captains freedom, not otherwise.
Outing coach of SL team has said our cricket admins need a ‘Major Cleanup’ 2 focus players on the game. what does he mean by Cleanup.? Wht r the causes which make players out of focus on game.?
Dear Sir,
I must be totally honest when I did mention that I was confused how quickly the game got out of Sri Lanka’s grasp. That is why I questioned what the mode of operation of Sangakkara was in regard to setting an aggressive off side felid and request his bowlers to bowl to one side of the wicket. In his defence he could mention that none of his bowlers were not disciplined and delivered too many loose deliveries, which is correct factually. Nevertheless, it is the past and the ICC World Cup is only a One Day tournament, not Test Match cricket, which is the pinnacle of the game of cricket. Therefore, let us hope the fallout will not negate the sprit and morale of the Sri Lankan team, which is the most important aspects, including aspects such as honesty principle and fair play, which are very aspects in cricket at present. I believe honesty and fair play has been tarnished with the issue of match fixing in the game. Therefore any doubts or uncertainty in regard to a game of cricket internationally, may it be a One Day International or Test Match is thought to be linked to match fixing, which is not correct based on principle. Therefore this issue of match fixing has created a great deal of uncertainty in all cricket enthusiasts mind, including mine. Based on this factor of match fixing, if I did appear negative or infer any wrong doing on the part of the Sri Lankan cricket team in my original comments, I very sorry indeed for it, because as mentioned, it is incorrect to think in that way based on principle and equity. Nevertheless, we must all realise, including myself the past is the past, and let us all move forward as one, because the game is much greater than anything elese.
Cheers and best wishes,
Muralidaran Ramesh Somasunderam.
Kumar S has done the right thing by resigniing his role sparing SL Cricket the painful agony of having to remove him following his disastrous performance in the 2nd half of the game. In his summary comments, the coach alludes to Kumar S’s performance in calling for a “major cleanup”.
Kumar S is of of course, a great cricketer by any standard but with it comes a need for consistent performance an a need for reliable and “play to win until the last ball” leadership characteristic.
The best examples for toughness, consistency in approach, self belief and fight to the end attitudes and everflowering leadership come from the Australians.
As said in my previous blog, considering SL’s intrinsic network of social, political and economic forces that drive cricket in SL, Suraj Randiv is the best candidate for the captaincy of SL’s cricket team.
