A tense situation was reported in Thabuththegma a short while ago following a protest carried out by a group of farmers.
The protest was launched against granting permission to a Chinese bottled water company to utilize the Rajanganaya Wewa, which is supplying water to 17,000 acres of cultivations.
It was reported that the protesters had thrown stones at the Police Station of Thabuththegama and the Police had fired tear gas in return to disperse the protesting farmers.

Amarakoon,
As part of service to motherland, I was an Engineer in Mahaweli Development in late 70’s. I worked to develop Thambuttegama and its surrounds converting jungle lands to irrigable lands with irrigation infrastructure. I participated in the settlement of peasants in new Mahaweli lands on 2 1/2 blocks of land. Those were happy times.
Now, some Sinhala Buddhist kommis politician has sold water rights from the the Rajangane Reservoir to the Chinks for bottled water to service the thirst of Urban Population.
I stand shoulder to shoulder with the peasants in Thambuttegama in their struggle against Sinhala Buddhist tyranny.
