Top India politician Jayalalitha jailed for corruption
One of India’s most colourful and controversial politicians, Jayaram Jayalalitha, has been jailed on corruption charges in a high-profile case which has lasted for 18 years.
The chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu was found guilty of amassing wealth of more than $10m (£6.1m) which was unaccounted for.
She has to pay a multi-million dollar fine and resign as chief minister.
A former actress, her life has been marked by a series of high and lows.
The verdict was delivered by a special court in Bangalore amid tight security.
The prosecution argued that Jayalalitha and three others committed an offence against society, the Indian Express reported.
It said that supporters of AIADMK party were forcibly dispersed by police as they tried to make their way to the court.
The BBC’s Jill McGivering says that Jayalalitha is a legendary figure – a flamboyant former film star who has been central to south Indian politics for three decades.
The corruption case focused on her personal wealth and was brought by a rival political party,
Jayalalitha has always argued that it was politically motivated.
Known by her followers as Amma or Mother, she inspires intense loyalty, even adoration.
But she has been associated with a lavish lifestyle.
Her foster son’s wedding almost 20 years ago broke world records for its sheer scale – including 150,000 guests.

She shows a paragon of virtue but a queen of corruptions.Everybody knows that she received a handsome figure from LTTE diaspora. She should be hung in open field as a deterrent punishment. What politics does she know other than political prostitution. In Buddhism this is called “Dhitta Dhamma vedaneeya Karma” She showed love to Tamils only for money. Poor Tamils at last now understand who she is.
This appears to be politically motivated. If similar cases are brought aginst all Indian politicians, the Indian parliament will be compelled to hold sessions behing prison walls.
The Amma will wriggle out of this mess in a jiffy.
A great day for the world, when a popular “THIEF” is jailed.
Every co-thief will call it “politically motivated” or whatever, rather than arguing their case in a court.
If someone do not accept a verdict from a legitimate court, it is better for them to go and live with animals.
How to have similar cases for all.? That’s not possible, such cases will only have for those who involved. Cases come with causes! No case without cause! No cause – no case! If cause – then the case! So always, cause & case therefor! There protest against buddhist also causes them self undoing. Now they destroy themselves.
Mr Paneerchelvam, cousin of our long-gone the Late Mr Thamilchelvam has been appointed CM of Tamil Nadu,
I simply wonder when these guys will depart form dreamland and join the brave Sinhala Buddhists of Sri lanka towards the Wonder of Asia?
A few weeks back I commented that Jayalalitha’s days are numbered. But I didn’t expect it to be this short. I said that she would lose in the next election or die due to old age and ill-health, whichever comes first. I somehow felt that she would be blown away due to the injustice she was doing to our nation. Now it has actually happened. This was quite surprising for me. The truth has prevailed. Justice has been done.
I am glad this woman has been ultimately sent to prison for undeclared wealth, which mostly accumulated from bribery and corruption she indulged in along with her fellow travelling politicians. How sad she did not use her immense wealth to relieve poverty in Tamil Nadu of the millions of Tamils eking out a hard existence in slums. I hope she can never return to politics. I hope she dies in prison from a heart attack. But in prison they will make her life luxurious also with bodyguards and an army of slaves.
