Four individuals including a university lecturer have been hospitalized following an assault by a group of students from the Sri Jayawardenapura University.
The attack had occurred yesterday (March 14) afternoon when the lecturer had intervened in order to disperse a crowd of aggressive students, Dr. N.L.A. Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura claimed.
The cause of the tense situation is reported be when several senior students had attempted to force a group of first-year students into taking part in certain political activities.
A lecturer of the university and three other security officers had then intervened to settle the quarrel and were then attacked by the group of senior students.

sad to see our tax money go to waste by these hooligans
I would not be surprised if the senior students who tried to force 1st year undergrads into attending political rallies were leftist, anarchist JVP fanatics. Assaulting lecturers who intervened, like a pack of mad dogs, seems like the modus operandi of the JVP political pariahs who try to mobilise fledgling university undergrads into political demonstrations and open confrontations with the security forces against the UPFA government, as in the Arab world. Since the JVP has lost all political credibility among the general population they try to create havoc among the people, to make life miserable for them. JVP will never be allowed to topple the UPFA government by their raucus frenzied behaviour. This is not the Arab world. JVP will be crushed, as in the previous insurrections, and they leaders will be eliminated.
The Minister of Higher Education must come down heavily on them, the culprits arrested and charged with GBH and imprisoned. They should also be sacked from the university on conviction. Universities are seats of learning and not of political unrest. Let this message be driven home hard. Ragging should also be made a criminal offence and punished with imprisonment. The culprits should then be expelled. Let us clean up our universities and make them respectable, where young impressionable students can be safe to learn and serve the nation. No other country gives free university education as we do. Those who graduate must serve the nation in a debt of gratitude, and not seek high rewards in well heeled jobs.
