Aho Gratian its too early to go………………
Graetian Ananda effused an inborn talent for music at the tender age of 2 years whilst playing the mouth-organ gifted by his grandfather Col. Darley Jayawardena. His musical journey is more than 35 years long in the musical industry; he has to his credit over 500 songs in approximately 250 movies. He has also directed music for more than 20 movies.
His mother was an excellent pianist and his father was a police officer. He was educated at St. Matthew’s College and St. Joseph’s College.
Being spiritually inclined, Gratien made immense contributions to music in the Church.
The All Saints Church in Borella was his haven and he performed well in western orchestra music under the supervision of Rev.Father John Herath. He mastered many instruments including the piano, trumpet and accordian.
Ernest De Soyza saw magnificent potential in young Gratien and invited him to join his band, Ernest Combo. Gratien also was a member of many other bands including the ‘Dreamers’, ‘Superset’ and the ‘Fortunes’.
At one time, Gratien was an assistant to Film music director Sarath Dassanayake. In 1978, the song ‘Etha Duraka Desa Pavela’ was a big hit for Gratien.
Gratien has been a leader in Sri Lanka’s music industry with multiple roles as a music director and playback singer. Ever since he sang the song ‘Bindu Bindu Kandulu Gala’ with Shyami Fonseka for the movie, ‘Mal Kekulu’, he has demonstrated amazing musical skills.
In 1994, he won the Sarasaviya Award for ‘Best Male Vocalist’ for the film ‘Raja Daruwo’. He also won ‘Best Playback Singer’ for the more recent movie, ‘Angalika’. He is also the mastermind of the most popular love song, ‘Adara Senewey’. More recently, he had his own show called ‘Ananda Rathriya’ held in Milano and Verona where the audience included Italy’s current PM, Silvio Berlosconi.
Subsequently, Gratien directed the music and singing for a new international film called ‘Julia’ which was filmed in the UK. Gratien’s CD ‘Desithaha Gee’ is a monument to his contributions to the world of music.
Gratien is an everlasting musician in the Sinhala Nation. I had the privilege of working with him on stage in many occasions. May his soul rest in peace.
